Life sciences in Italy for Danish, Swedish and Finnish biotech and medtech

Where Italy’s clinical, regulatory and medical affairs talent is, which roles Nordic life sciences companies hire first, and what to watch for compliance.

The Nordic region has a strong life sciences sector: large pharma groups, biotech clusters around Copenhagen, Lund and Stockholm, and a growing medtech scene in Finland. Italy is one of Europe’s largest pharmaceutical producers and runs a large number of clinical trials. For a Nordic company running a trial or preparing a launch, Italian sites, doctors and patients often matter.

That usually means people on the ground before there is an Italian company.

The first roles

Nordic biotech and medtech companies typically start with:

  • Clinical research associates (CRAs) to monitor Italian trial sites;
  • clinical trial managers for country-level coordination;
  • regulatory affairs specialists for submissions and contact with the Italian medicines agency (AIFA) and ethics committees;
  • pharmacovigilance staff;
  • medical science liaisons to work with key opinion leaders;
  • later, market access and medical sales roles.

Many CRAs are home-based and travel to sites, which suits a company without an office.

Where the talent is

  • Milan and Lombardy: the largest concentration of pharma companies, CROs and hospitals.
  • Rome and Lazio, including the Latina area with its pharmaceutical production.
  • Tuscany: Siena and Florence, with vaccines and life sciences research.
  • Naples: universities, hospitals and pharma.

Italian life sciences graduates are well trained, and many have worked for CROs or multinational sponsors, so they know international SOPs.

The contract

Most roles fall under the Chemical-Pharmaceutical agreement (CCNL Chimico-farmaceutico). It includes a supplementary pension fund and a health fund with employer contributions, which belong in the budget. Commercial roles in distribution companies may fall under Commerce and services.

Compliance points

  • Regulated roles. Some positions, such as the local pharmacovigilance contact or the scientific information manager, may need registration with AIFA, and some may require a local entity. Check before you hire for these. [confirm which roles require a local entity or registration]
  • Medical representatives. Scientific information to doctors follows Italian rules on qualifications and reporting; hire people who already meet them.
  • Confidentiality. Contracts cover trial data, patient data and inventions, aligned with GDPR, which Nordic companies already apply.
  • Car and territory. Field roles usually have a company car and a defined territory.

Timing

A typical pattern: one or two CRAs and a clinical trial manager during the trial, regulatory and medical affairs as approval approaches, then a local company at launch. An Employer of Record (EOR) covers the first two phases. When you register products or open an office, we transfer staff to your company without a break in service.

Non-EU staff

Some candidates, and some staff you may want to move from Copenhagen or Stockholm, are not EU citizens. They need an Italian work permit; we handle it as the employer, for €2,500 per case.

Cost

A home-based CRA costs the gross salary, employer contributions, 13th month, TFR, CCNL funds and travel on actuals, plus €250 a month. The cost calculator gives the base.

Questions we hear from Nordic companies

Can a CRA employed through an EOR monitor sites for our trial? Yes. The CRA works under your SOPs and your clinical operations team. We are the employer; the scientific and regulatory responsibility remains with the sponsor or CRO as defined in your trial set-up.

Do life sciences roles have special working-time rules? Site travel and irregular hours are common. The CCNL rules on working time and travel apply; define the expected travel pattern before the offer so that it can be priced.

What about non-compete clauses for MSLs? They are possible under the Italian conditions: written, paid, and limited in time, place and activity. For many roles confidentiality and IP clauses are enough.

In short

Italy is a natural place for Nordic life sciences companies to run trials and prepare launches. Start with CRAs and clinical managers through an EOR, add regulatory and medical affairs as approval approaches, and check early which roles need registration or a local entity. Budget for the Chemical-Pharmaceutical CCNL funds and travel. When you launch, move the team into your own company without a break in service.
