Hiring by city

Hire in Milan

Milan is where Italian buyers, design studios and head offices sit. For a Nordic company it is usually the first Italian seat: one sales lead, one designer, one engineer. The market is quick, and good candidates have several options.

Sectors

Fashion, furniture and industrial design, banking and asset management, consulting, media, pharma and the Italian head offices of most multinationals. Fintech and SaaS startups cluster around the city, and many Nordic consumer and design brands run their Italian sales from here.

Where people study

Politecnico di Milano for engineering and design, Bocconi for economics and management, the Università Statale for law, sciences and medicine, Bicocca for sciences and statistics.

Local income tax in Milan

On top of national IRPEF, employees pay a city and a regional surcharge, both withheld through payroll. It changes the employee's net pay, not your cost.

Effect on net pay

Milan exempts incomes up to €23,000 from the city surcharge, the highest threshold of the five cities, and its 0.8% rate is low for a large city. Lombardy also starts with a low regional rate. At equal gross pay, a Milan employee normally keeps slightly more than one in Rome or Naples. Rent eats part of that advantage.

Example: on a gross salary of [€ gross], the city surcharge in Milan is about [€ amount] a year. The net pay calculator shows the full breakdown.

Practical notes

  • Cost of living. Rent: [one-bedroom rent, central and outer areas]. Housing is the main reason Milan candidates ask for more than elsewhere in Italy. [cost of living index vs national average]
  • Commuting. Five metro lines, suburban rail and trams. Many people live in Monza, Bergamo, Pavia or Novara and come in by train.
  • Travel. Linate is close to the centre, Malpensa is the long-haul airport. [confirm direct routes to Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki]
  • Salaries. Typical bands: [€ ranges by role to verify].
  • Time zone. Italy runs on the same clock as Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, and one hour behind Helsinki. Your stand-up, your lunch and your Friday afternoon line up without effort; only Reykjavik is off, by one hour in winter and two in summer.
