Hiring by city

Hire in Turin

Turin built the Italian car industry and still designs and tests much of it. For Nordic vehicle, truck and component makers, it is the obvious place to find engineers who already know Italian suppliers, at lower cost than Milan.

Sectors

Automotive and its supply chain, aerospace and space systems, industrial automation, ICT and software, food and beverage brands, banking. Electrification and software-defined vehicles are where Nordic and Piedmontese engineering overlap most.

Where people study

Politecnico di Torino for mechanical, aerospace, electronic and computer engineering; the Università di Torino for sciences, economics and law. Many engineers have years inside large industrial groups.

Local income tax in Turin

On top of national IRPEF, employees pay a city and a regional surcharge, both withheld through payroll. It changes the employee's net pay, not your cost.

Effect on net pay

Turin is the only one of the five cities with a progressive city surcharge: 0.8% on lower bands rising to 1.2% on the top band, and the exemption is the lowest of the five. A senior engineer in Turin pays more city surcharge than one in Milan or Bologna at the same gross. Cheaper housing usually offsets it.

Example: on a gross salary of [€ gross], the city surcharge in Turin is about [€ amount] a year. The net pay calculator shows the full breakdown.

Practical notes

  • Cost of living. Rent: [one-bedroom rent, central and outer areas]. [cost of living index vs Milan]
  • Commuting. One metro line, trams, buses and a suburban rail link. Flat and compact, with many cyclists, which Nordic managers tend to like.
  • Travel. High-speed trains reach Milan in about an hour. For Nordic flights, connect through a hub or Milan Malpensa.
  • Salaries. Typical bands: [€ ranges by role to verify].
  • Time zone. Italy runs on the same clock as Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen, and one hour behind Helsinki. Your stand-up, your lunch and your Friday afternoon line up without effort; only Reykjavik is off, by one hour in winter and two in summer.
