Hiring by sector

Software engineers in Italy

For a Stockholm, Oslo or Copenhagen scale-up, Italy is a near-shore market in the same time zone. Engineers are well trained, many already work remotely for foreign companies, and salaries are lower than at home. Most hires will be fully remote, which shapes the contract.

Usual CCNL

Commerce and services (Terziario) or Metalworking (Metalmeccanico) for tech companies, depending on your activity and the role.

Roles

Backend, frontend and mobile developers, DevOps and SRE, data and ML engineers, QA, engineering managers.

Where

Milan, Turin, Rome, Bologna, Pisa and Florence, Naples. Many seniors have left the big cities and work remotely from smaller towns.

Points to settle

  • Remote work is a written agreement. Italian "lavoro agile" needs one, with rules on equipment and the right to disconnect. We add it to the contract.
  • Equipment. Ship a laptop or let us reimburse one. Documented either way, so it is not taxed as salary.
  • IP. Code written under employment belongs to the employer. Our explicit IP and confidentiality clause assigns it to your company.
  • Employee share programmes. Italian employees can join your option or share plan; tax depends on the plan. [confirm Italian treatment of Nordic option/share plans]
  • On-call and overtime. On-call is paid under the CCNL. For senior engineers, a "quadro" contract with flat-rate extra hours is an option.
  • Flat hierarchy, written decisions. Italian engineers adapt quickly to Nordic consensus culture, but expect decisions and priorities in writing, not only agreed in a meeting.

Cost example

A senior backend engineer on [€ gross] a year costs the gross salary plus social contributions, 13th month and TFR, plus our €250 a month. Put the salary in the calculator for the monthly total.
